Quick Answer: What is nail polish, and how is it different from gel?
Nail polish, also called nail lacquer, is a color coat that dries in the air, with no UV or LED lamp. OPI says a lacquer manicure with a base coat, two thin color coats and a top coat lasts up to 7 days (OPI). Gel polish has to be cured under a lamp and usually wears longer.
Key Observations
- Nail polish and nail lacquer mean the same product today: an air-dry color coat.
- Use one base coat, two thin color coats and one top coat.
- Wait one to two minutes between coats so air does not get trapped.
- Four of our five best-selling polishes are whites, soft pinks or neutrals.
- Thick polish needs a polish thinner, not remover.
Here is how regular polish compares with gel.

Is nail lacquer the same as nail polish?
Yes. Nail lacquer and nail polish are the same air-dry product today, and brands use the two names for it. OPI explains that "polish" is the older word, from the days when nails were buffed to a shine, and that its classic formula is a lacquer (OPI). ORLY also calls the terms nearly interchangeable (ORLY).
That is why you will see OPI Nail Lacquer, Essie Nail Lacquer and OPI Nail Polish in the same collection here. They all go on with a brush and dry in the air.

Which polish shades sell most at Universal Nail Supplies?
Classic light shades lead our sales. We checked Shopify's best-selling ranking for this collection on November 1, 2026. Four of the top five are whites, soft pinks or neutrals, and the fifth is a classic red.
- OPI Funny Bunny (H22), a white that OPI lists among its best sellers
- OPI Bubble Bath (S86), a soft pink
- OPI Put It In Neutral (T65)
- OPI Big Apple Red (N25)
- OPI Alpine Snow (L00)
- OPI Lisbon Wants Moor OPI (L16)
- OPI Malaga Wine (L87)
- OPI Cajun Shrimp (L64)
- OPI Baby, Take A Vow (SH1)
OPI describes Bubble Bath as a candy pink and suggests layering it with Funny Bunny for a milky pink (OPI). For more shade help, read our guides to milky white shades, nude nail colors, the best reds and the best OPI colors.
How do you apply regular nail polish?
Apply regular polish in four layers: one base coat, two thin color coats and one top coat, letting each layer dry for one to two minutes. This is OPI's own method for its lacquer (OPI).
- Start with clean, dry nails with no oil or old polish on them.
- Apply a base coat, such as OPI Natural Nail Base Coat, and let it dry.
- Apply a thin first coat of color and wait one to two minutes.
- Apply a second thin coat and wait again.
- Finish with a top coat and run it over the tip of the nail.
How many coats of polish should you use?
Use two thin coats of color between the base and top coat. OPI says extra coats make polish harder to dry and can make it wear faster.
How long does nail polish take to dry?
Each layer needs one to two minutes before the next goes on, according to OPI. ORLY says a full lacquer manicure takes about seven minutes or more to dry (ORLY). A quick-dry top coat like OPI RapiDry Top Coat or OPI Drip Dry drying drops can speed things up.
How long does regular polish last, and how do you make it last longer?
A regular lacquer manicure lasts up to 7 days when you use a base coat, two thin color coats and a top coat, according to OPI. Most early chips come from skipped steps, thick coats or rushing the drying time.
- Never skip the base coat. OPI says skipping it gives a shorter-lasting manicure.
- Keep color coats thin, two coats only.
- Wait one to two minutes between layers.
- Seal with a top coat. ORLY notes that all-in-one polishes usually wear less well than a base, color and top routine.
- If your nails are dry or brittle, a strengthening base coat can help. See our nail treatments.
Shop every base and top coat on our base and top coats page, or read what each layer does in our guide to base coat and top coat.
Does polish expire, and how do you fix thick polish?
Polish does age. Nail educator site Nail Knowledge says an unopened bottle lasts about two to three years with good storage, and opened polish has a shorter life (Nail Knowledge).
- Thick or stringy polish: add a few drops of polish thinner, not remover.
- Do not over-thin. Thinner will not make old polish last forever.
- Replace polish that has separated for good, gone clumpy or smells odd.
- Store bottles tightly closed in a cool, dark place.
- Roll the bottle between your hands instead of shaking it, to avoid bubbles.
What should you check on a polish label?
Check the ingredient list and the warnings on every bottle. The FDA says retail cosmetics must list ingredients even when they are marked for professional use, which helps people who want to avoid ingredients such as formaldehyde (FDA).
- Use polish in a room with good ventilation, as the FDA advises.
- Keep bottles away from flames and heat. The FDA warns some nail products can catch fire.
- Stop using a product and see a doctor if you get a reaction, and report it to the FDA.

Nail polish FAQs
Do I need a base coat with regular nail polish?
Yes. OPI recommends a base coat under every lacquer manicure because it helps the color last and protects the nail from staining. Skipping it usually means a shorter-lasting manicure.
How do I make nail polish dry faster?
Use thin coats, wait one to two minutes between layers, and finish with a quick-dry top coat or drying drops. Thick coats take longer to dry and are more likely to smudge or bubble.
How do you remove regular nail polish?
Wipe it off with polish remover on a cotton pad. Regular lacquer does not need soaking. Gel polish is different: it needs the top layer filed and an acetone soak.
Is nail polish bad for your nails?
Used with a base coat and taken off with remover rather than picked off, regular polish is an everyday cosmetic. Anyone who gets redness, itching or swelling should stop using the product and speak to a doctor.
Where can I buy professional nail polish online?
You can buy it here at Universal Nail Supplies, where OPI, Essie, Orly and Morgan Taylor lacquers are listed together with base coats, top coats and drying drops.
